As a new mom, when I observe my child who is just one year old, I intuitively connect to his natural state of inner silence. Effortlessly present, without ego or sense of separation, he is a mirror lake.
During one of our first snows, I bundled my baby up and took him outside so that he could experience the nature of snow for the first time. What I saw happen in him was magic.
When you look all around you and all you see is white, your eyes turn inward. When the air is blanketed softly in snow, your ears go outward far extending their average reach; the mind quiets and the body slows to a near halt.
And so I understood. Seeing what you can’t see and hearing what you can’t hear.
